Make balanced random teams

Paste one name per line and choose how to group them: a number of teams, or a maximum people per team. Every name lands in exactly one group, and the group sizes differ by at most one.

One name per line — up to 1,000 names of 80 characters each.

How to use it

  1. Paste the names, one per line (up to 1,000).
  2. Choose how to group them: a number of teams (2–500, never more than the names), or a maximum people per team (2–1000).
  3. Press Generate teams. Every name goes into exactly one team, and the group sizes stay as even as possible.
  4. Copy the plain-text result or download it as a .txt file.

Questions

Are the teams random?

Yes — the shuffle uses the browser's cryptographic randomness, then the names are dealt one by one.

Can the same name appear twice?

Only if it appears twice in your list. Each line is one entry, and every entry is used exactly once.

What if the number of names is not divisible by the team count?

Some teams get one more person. The group sizes never differ by more than one.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. The generation happens in this page; the only network activity is loading the site itself.

What does People per team do?

You set the largest group size. The tool makes as many teams as names ÷ size rounded up; no group is larger than that size, and the sizes differ by at most one.

Can I reuse a saved list for teams?

Yes. Open a list saved in this browser on this page, or save the current names for later. The same lists work in the name wheel and here; they stay on your device.
